congress at the capitol. he also met privately with the president in the oval office. his remarks included mentions that would delight and concern liberals and conservatives. the pope brought up immigration and discussed climate change and income equality and religious liberty. later, the pope was talking about abortion. let's get the latest on the historic trip from cnn's rosa flores. >> reporter: john and christine, pope francis not holding back on his first day in the united states tackling immigration and climate change and religious freedom and cannonizing the first saint behind me. he has another action packed day. he starts off with a much anticipated speech before congress.

they are wondering how democrats and republicans are going to react to what he says, especially after he has made some critical comments about capitalism. saying it is the issue of the devil. we know the pope prefers to be with the regular man. he will, in very much francis fashion, he meets with the homeless at catholic charities nations. with the united he has been critical of christians. we are expecting he will make some comments there that could put countries in the hot seat asking them to do more to help the refugees in iraq, syria and afghanistan. we don't know, of course, what pope francis is going to say. that is who he is. we know that he speaks off the cuff and he could have these

countries experience a coming to jesus moment. john, christine. >> rosa, thanks. after the pope's meeting with the president, he spoke to 300 bishops. he praised their courage as they bring healing to victims of sexual abuse by priests. those are words of outrage. he said they showed quote cowardace, not courage. he was met by people at the campus of washington university. he was there to cannonize a new american. junipero serra. many see serra as a symbol of

the mission ancestor of oppressi oppression. from there, the pope made an unscheduled visit. he met with the nuns from the little sisters of the poor. they have been fighting obamacare that requires birth control in health plans. he focused on their ministry to the elderly poor. the speaks person said he spoke to us from the youngest populism to the elderly. he may not have spoken about the lawsuit, but that sent a message. the pope will be welcomed to jfk airport by mayor de blasio. you can imagine security for the

pope's visit is a top concern for the new york police department. the nypd says there are no known threats to pope francis, but a threat assessment lists several groups that express support for the pope and lone wolves and right wing extremists and the mafia. cnn asks bill bratton about the issue. >> the concern is some of them have the ability to carry out a threat. isis has shown remarkable validity to inspire people and engage in action. lone wolf-type of action. we treat this seriously. we watch it. we monitor it. all of our security is to prevent and prepare to respond. >> barricades are going up along fifth avenue. new york city will be a tough afternoon. >> public transportation.

>> stay with cnn all day for continuing coverage of the pope's visit. he will be live as the holy father addresses congress. breaking news out of yemen. at least 29 people are dead in a bomb attack at a mosque there. it happened as worshippers attending a morning prayer service. dozens of people injured. the officials say the death toll is expected to rise. at this point no group has come forward. a number of bombings at mosques there. a new barrage of attacks from donald trump at an event in south carolina. trump targeted most of the presidential rivals. he speculated carly fiorina is broke. he called hillary clinton shrill. a remarks on chris christie sweating at the republican debate. and the poll from fox news at 26%, i'm sure trump will talk about that later.

eight points behind him is carson. carly fiorina is up from where she was last tigme. let's go to south carolina and sara murray for the latest on donald trump. >> reporter: donald trump fielding questions in a more serious forum in columbia, south carolina. getting a hint at what middle class can expect from him. >> i will put in a tax plan next week. it will be a great plan with a major reduction in taxes for the middle class. you watch. >> reporter: an aide to the campaign says we can expect that tax policy next week. here in south carolina, trump seemed he was trying to get his groove back. he did that by coming out swinging against nearly all of his gop rivals. the newest is marco rubio. he called the senator a

lightweight and took issue with the senator over whether trump was ready to take over as commander in chief. >> rubio has the worst attendance record and they want him to be president. >> reporter: old feuds reignited as well. trump is now boycotting fox news after they quote treated him very unfairly. >> not boycotting cnn. he will be on cnn in a few hours. the 7:00 hour of "new day." and hillary clinton said she did not start the birther movement. in an interview with don lemon, clinton calling all rumors about the president obama citizenship untrue and brushing off allegations that she is the one responsible for starting all this back in 2008.

>> no, that is so ludicrous, don. honestly, i just believe that first of all, totally untrue. secondly, the president and i have never had any kind of confrontation like that. this is such a bad example of what's wrong with instantaneous of reactions and americans feeding off this. all of us have to stand against it. i have been blamed for nearly everything. that was a new one to me. >> all of this stems, john, from when she was running against president obama. then senator obama. the allegation was people in her camp were the ones first starting talking about his childhood and where he went to school and where he was from. >> she was asked on "60 minutes"

and she was asked if he was muslim. she has no evidence of that. fox poll voters were asked who do you believe would be the next president. the defense department denying reports that dozens of trained rebels in syria defected to al qaeda. one rebel commander distanced himse himself. now an al qaeda affiliate is posting photos online claiming rebels surrendered the pentagon issued weapons. and hackers who stole security files. got away with 5.6 million finger print records. that is 4.5 million records more than reported.

that news coming to us before xi jinping is visiting washington. u.s. officials believe china is responsible for the data breach. i can tell you people in the intelligence forces are concerned that their identities compromis compromised. the food and drug administration is dealing with high profile mishaps over pathogens. there will be new agency wide training over specimen inventory programs. thehange is coming in response over outside experts conducting reports. and asian stocks are lower. shanghai closing up 1%. it has been volatile there all year. yesterday, stocks fell for the second day. dow finished down 51 points. today we hear from janet yellen

at the university of massachusetts amherst for any clues of an interest rate hike. a lot of what to do. pimco founder bill gross wants a rate hike now. gross says near zero rates are hurting pension fund safvers. he says 401(k)s are on a revolving spit being cooked alive focused on models and nonexistent inflation. we will get a durable goods report and new numbers are mortgage rates. a lot that could move. >> i'm getting my popcorn and soda for the durable goods report. the ceo of volkswagen is stepping down. he is out. 11 million vehicles effected here. >> i think this is outrageous.

the audacious and outrageous scandal at volkswagen is growing after the company admitted it programmed cars to cheat on emissions tests, the ceo stepped down. he said he knew nothing about the wrongdoing. cnn's atika shubert is following the absolutely outrageous developments live in berlin. good morning, attika. >> reporter: and even angela merkel said they need to figure out what is wrong. the ceo resigned and they asked the criminal prosecutor here in germany to look to launch a criminal investigation to see who was behind the cheating of emissions tests. this is a big question.

how much did the ceo and others actually know about the cheating. it is hard to believe that the headquarters would not know something is going on. the ceo is known as being an absolute stickler for detail. he is an engineer and volkswagen veteran. a lot of questions about what he did and did not know at this point, john. >> someone knew. when you reprogram computers in the cars to cheat. not one or two cars, but 11 million. atika shubert for us in berlin. thank you. >> it rocked the automobile industry. volkswagen is a very big part of germany's export machine. an emotional start to the so-called fast and furious trial in arizona. a former border patrol agent talked about trying to save

brian terry over the federal gun operation. two suspects are charged in terry's death. operation allowed criminals to buy weapons and the government would track the weapons. some 1,400 firearms were lost. two were found where agent terry was killed. three chicago schools will be closed due to legionnaires' disease. officials say there is no indication anyone in the effected school buildings actually caught the disease. another legal defeat for kim davis who went to jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. her latest appeal was rejected. davis argued that issuing licenses would cause her irreparable harm to her religious beliefs.

she is willing to suffer the consequences again. >> you have millions of christians who object this whole same-sex marriage issue. are their rights invalid? are there are rights not worth anything? it is a fight worth fighting for. >> you prepared to go back to jail? >> whatever the cost. >> when asked if she would issue a same-sex marriage license to her children, she would stick to her beliefs. this is a big week in washington. a very tense meeting potentially with the president. what is making dinner tonight so complicated. that's next.

president obama hosts chinese president xi jinping with a private dinner at the white house tonight. the two have developed a strong relationship, but the countries are at odds creating a widening divide. the tensions with the countries are the highest they have been in years. the white house is hoping the president's friendship with mr. xi will find a better way forward. let's get the latest from andrew stevens from hong kong. andrew, it would take me four or five minutes to tick off the things that happened in the last year between the united states and china. this is probably the most important relationship in the world, frankly, it has been really rocky lately. >> reporter: there is more going wrong than right.

the president has been in the u.s. and he has been getting a steady drum beat of complaints about cyber security. that seems to be the topic of the discussions so far. he talked about it himself when he gave his keynote address. he has been meeting with key executives and particularly from the tech industry in seattle today before going to washington. you know, there were big leaders. the company like apple and amazon and microsoft. all piling into a forum where mr. xi was. he had representatives from dubai and alibaba. the topic of the discussion is the complaints led by the mmerce secretary so mr. xi knows what to expect.

talking about lack of market access and hacking and intellectual property rights and piracy. they cannot get an even break in china. president xi says we will open things up more and more accessible for u.s. companies, but the internet will have strong characteristics. they seem to be talking past each other. >> we just saw a photo with one. microsoft executives. the top talent that met with president xi, it is interesting to me. many of them, their products are hacked, banned or censored in china. >> reporter: and facebook. mark zuckerberg's product is not in china. it shows how desperate they want to get in there. this is a massive market.

1.2 billion mobile phones. 6 million subscribers on the internet. they feel they are being shut out. if they do get in, they are treated unfairly. on top of that, the whole illegal structure about being hacked. having corporate secrets taken. this is a private think tank coming out with this number. $300 billion is lost to u.s. companies in hacking through taking commercial secrets a year. that is astonishing. >> the government angle and the concerns among u.s. officials that china and china's military is behind the major sensitive hacks of governmen information. you think that will come up at this meeting ? do you think the president will talk to president xi about? >> reporter: that is an interesting question. i can't see why it would not

come up. obama has 16 months left in office. this is a big deal. hacking. it is absolutely cloudy the relationship between the two countries. you are right about that. this new report out in "the wall street journal" today pointing to a unit of the people's liberation army. using chinese activists to get access to key computer networks not just for the u.s., but countries around the south china sea. we know the china is building structures in the south china sea expanding territory. a lot have been complaining hard. those countries are targeted. this is according to a cyber security firm. it is not just the u.s., but a bigger issue than that. it is an issue that the white house needs to address and president xi has to face this as well. these reports come out

adoring crowds at the basilica at the university of washington. in a fiat, the people's pope, he was there to cannonize junipero serra. many see serra as a mission of the oppression of the ancestors. from there, the pope made an unscheduled visit that created controversy. he met with a group of nuns fighting a federal regulation. the rule requires the little sisters of the poor to provide contraception coverage in the employee's health plan. the pope did not bring up the lawsuit, but focused on their ministry to the elderly poor.

the widening scandal over rigged vehicle emission tests has forced the chief executive to resign of volkswagen. wednesday, he said he is stepping down in the best interest of the company. he said he had no knowledge of the wrongdoing. atika shubert is following the latest in berlin. this is a scandal that has shaken the auto industry to the core. there have been recall after recall in the past few years. this is a company having secret software to program its cars so they can spew pollution except

when they are being tested by authorities. >> reporter: exactly. not only were they cheating on the emissions tests, but the cars, diesel cars tested on the roads pumping out as much as 40 times the legal limit. it is pretty flagrant and a lot of questions are being asked about just how much the higher management knew, particularly ceo martin wintercoryn. this is a ceo who is known as a stickler for detail. he is known for throwing cars off production lines because he did not like something in the paint job for example. he is an engineer and micro managing and a volkswagen veteran. many are asking what did he know and when did he know it. he resigned saying he did not know about the scandal, but he wants to get to the bottom of it. volkswagen has asked the german prosecutor to begin a criminal investigation to find out who is

responsible for constructing the elaborate plan to cheat at the emissions tests. christine. >> it is remarkable here that you have leaders of countries, finance ministers from all over europe weighing in on whether the investigation should widen to other companies as well. does it look like this is a volkswagen specific problem, atika? >> reporter: at the moment, that's what it appears. it has tremendous repercussions. it is not just one manufacturing, but others. this was just for nitrogen oxide emissions. what about all of the environmental tests out there? are there other ways that manufacturers are gaining the system? to give you a sense of the

what a week in washington. chinese president xi jinping arrives in washington. the two presidents have a complicated relationship with the human rights and military issues. let's get to cnn's andrew stevens live in hong kong. big meetings, andrew. >> reporter: big meetings, john.

if the recent past is anything to go by, cyber security is high on the agenda. that is what xi jinping has been hearing repeatedly during meetings in seattle which he kicked off the trip to the u.s. he mentioned it in his opening address. his policy address as it was called. he met leaders from u.s. leaders, particularly from the tech industries. a forum held by former u.s. treasury secretary today. 15 of the biggest tech companies in the united states were there along with the 15 chinese tech companies. you see some of the picture there is of some of the people involved. tim cook and jeff bezos was there. the message from the u.s. and relayed from the commerce secretary at the forum, was that china needs to do so much more, john, on protecting u.s. interests in china. particularly in the high tech

industry. giving u.s. more market access and a level playing field and stop hacking. stop cyber hacking and piracy. xi jinping, for his part, is saying we do hear your concerns. we will move to get things better for u.s. companies. china feels it has the upper hand here. the world needs china more than the world needs china. he at least is saying he hears the complaints and he says china stands by and is going to try to do something about market access. he has said clearly that china, at least the chinese government is not a hacker. it is not involved in hacking. that is an issue that is sure to come up with president obama. >> indeed. the u.s. disagrees with that. it is interesting to see how full and frank the discussions are. andrew stevens, thank you. and hank paulson organized the meeting. he has the longest bench of
